I’ve joined the ranks of amazing writers like nayyirah.waheed using #poetsofinstagram, #spilledink, #blackpoets and numerous other hashtags of which I am quickly becoming acquainted. I have even created my own #eggshellfreepoetry and #killinggeorgina.

I am posting image versions of my shorter poetic pieces along side reposts to amplify other artists, writers and marginalized voices.

Black and brown women

College, Students - Free pictures on Pixabay

I want to write something beautiful

My throat is full

And it burns

I want to write something enlightening

My head is a snow globe

Of truths and experiences

They swarm me, warm me, hold me close and whisper “nobody cares, nobody cares, nobody cares”

Hissssssssing

angry whispers in my ear

Seek to silence me and mine

“Nobody cares”

A refrain as old as time

I want to write something beautiful

I want to write something liberating

I want to write something enlightening

I want to write something illuminating

I want to write something that breaks the chains, turns the tides, screams the truths of me and mine from all the peaks

Shining a light for all that seeks

To see black and brown women whole!

Black and brown women free!

Black and brown women held UP, not back.

Black and brown women served, not serving.

Black and brown women protected, not rejected.

Black and brown women wrapped with the care and tenderness we have provided the masses for ages. Hold us close, whispers like honey, sweet, dripping syrup:

You matter baby. You are loved lady. Beautiful. Soft and kind. Unlock the pictures in your mind and fill me with your truths. Baby you, black and brown woman, are gold. Write me something beautiful. Unfold your truths to be told.

Because It Does

because it does.jpg

“I am a feminist, and what that means to me is much the same as the meaning of the fact that I am Black: it means that I must undertake to love myself and to respect myself as though my very life depends upon self-love and self-respect.”

June Jordan

H/T to the Black Women’s Blueprint on Facebook

I can’t NOT share this. The feeling that came over me when I saw this image and then read the quote…indescribable. When something so true graces you with its presence; you stop, take it in, reflect and embrace that felt understanding that comes over one’s whole being. That is what happened. Because it does. My life does depend upon me undertaking the primary and life giving act of self-love and self-respect*.

And that is why I must amplify black women’s truth. Because amplifying that which does not get seen as true/real/normal because of patriarchy, misogyny and racism is misogynoir. Simply amplifying what mirrors my reality acts to validate and expands my reality. No longer to be relegated to the shadows, kitchen tables and beauty salons where black women feel free to love on one another and validate each other’s lived experiences. Validation and amplification create that as a reality for those who have been living in their own bubble believing their truth is the only truth. So I couldn’t NOT share this. Because my life depends on this truth. It’s been said time and time again that only black women cape for black women. Black women put on your capes. #metoo #sayhername #standwithjemele #standwithava

*Note: Self respect is not the same as respectability. Let that marinate.

Polling the Audience: What do you want?

What do you want?

I’m trying to make this space on Patreon my own while also providing the access you want. Tell me what your thoughts are on the reward structure as I have it now. Does it work for you to have levels of access separated out the way it is now? Do you think it would be more appealing to more people if it was all access and “pay what you can” format instead?

I am TRYING to take a poll but Patreon is glitching and not including the poll. So…here are the options I put in:

A. Happy with the set-up currently

B. Prefer a “pay what you can” All Patrons have the same access to content format

C. Not interested in being in your FB group

D. Just want to read poetry

E. Want access to ALL OF IT but only got $5 to spare on your ramblings

F. Not happy with any of the content. You suck at life.

G. Some other possibility I’m not aware of or haven’t thought of yet, because coffee…

Tell me what you want. If it aligns with that I can give, I am happy to oblige.

Things I no longer worry about…

Bigstock/Anthony Correia

What gift do I need

To give you for you to see me

What dance can I do?

What game should I play?

What invention can I make?

What profound thing can I say?

What accomplishment is enough,

to be seen and valued?

Tell me the combination

So I can do my best multiplied by

your best and his best and his…

Mediocrity! But it is ok and enough to be the highest of the land

Because it’s “gentleman’s C’s”

if you look like that man.

I need the code

The secret to visibility and representation.

Is it respectability?

If I do all the things and go all the places you deem acceptable,

Take on all the things you value

will you accept me? Value me? Respect me?

That is a tightrope to walk,

A thin line, a small box.

I hope I don’t fall.

I hope I can fold myself into myself and make me small,

If I fail, if I fall

I know, now, you won’t catch me,

as me

warts and all.
