From the teacher: I’m hoping to teach this author and book as part of a Poetry Writing and Reading unit I’m doing in my ninth grade English Language Arts class.

The school where I teach, Rhode Island Nurses Institute, Middle College, is a 9-12 public charter school located in downtown Providence, and primarily serving Black and Latino students.

The school’s aims include preparing the next generation of health care staff and diversifying the pool of health care workers. Smith’s poetry is a great fit for my class and this school, for his topics cover the wide range of human emotions and experiences – some of which overlap with medical topics like trauma and PTSD and other aspects of surviving abuse and terror.
